Kristopher was diagnosed with pneumonia again today. This time it has him down. He is not bad enough to be admitted, thankfully, but he is missing school. He's laying around and fever only stays down if we do motrin every 6 hrs. His normal temp is 97, and he's been staying around 100-almost 103. He has a very bad cough this time, and just really out of it. As long as he's at the lower end of the temp, I can get him to eat and drink. He just has not been doing much of either. We have to watch to keep from dehydration or that's a sure ticket to the hospital. For now, motrin and antibiotic, lots of rest and fluids and hopefully he's back to normal real fast.
Not sure what caused it this time. Monday they blew off symptoms as just allergies, and the chest x-ray was clear. Since then, it's settled and is heard. He also complained of chest pain in that immediate area. We go back on June 1st, and I think at that time I will be requesting allergy testing. Up till this year, he has been healthy and only ever had minor colds. This is a whole new ball game and it's really stressing me out. They also said if it's not allergies, it may just be that his immune system has fallen really low. With that, if he gets one more bout of this crap, they will do immune system testing to see what might be going on. It all sounds scary.
Geez, poor kid can't catch a break. I hope he gets well soon.
ReplyDeleteI read something not too long ago about how there really is no evidence that running a high fever is bad for kids and that letting them run a fever actually helps them to get over it faster because that is part of the normal immune response and it's really part of the healing. Taking fever reducer actually impedes the process. Of course, I'm not making a recommendation here. I wouldn't let my kid roast and hold off on the motrin when he's not feeling well. I just thought it was kinda interesting.
I wonder if part of the reason he's gotten hit so hard this year is his immune system catching up since he's been home with you his whole life pretty much and it's just a lot for him to handle now? Whatever it is, I just hope he's not feeling too bad, dealing with a lot of illness is hard on kids.
