Sick baby

My friend went in labor on Sunday evening and when I picked up her little girl, she had a fever of 102.8. She's been coughing pretty nasty and snotting and was just really sleepy. My friend was upset and a mess over the fact that she had to leave her with me like this, and her family really claimed they weren't able to watch her so I was the only other option. I took her and it's been a little stressful but going ok.
Yesterday I took her to the dr because the fever hit 103.1 yesterday morning. After a total look, they say "well, this could be the swine flu because she did not get her vaccine." Swine Flu! I panicked in my mind because I've been holding and comforting here, K was playing with her last week and right in her face a lot, and I was freaking out about us catching it. They gave her the tamilflu and sent us on our way. Never tested this or anything. Later in the day I was really concerned because she did not pee at all while here, did not drink or eat anything and I was afraid she was becoming dehydrated. I called them back, and the other dr, the main one who started the practice, claims it sounds like a virus, it will run it's course and if her fevers stay high then it's probably the flu but too early to tell. So 2 different answers. She finally drank some for me last night, peed and was in bed by 7:45. She slept all night and the fever hasn't gone above 99.3 since her 7:30pm motrin last night. I discovered she's getting molars so now I'm wondering if it's just a cold and the fever is from teething.....I'm not sure though. It's very stressful because she's not mine! I worry that I'll do something wrong and make her worse.
The fever isn't technically a fever anymore, and she's drinking finally and playing a lot so she's on the mend. Just coughing and sounds congested now.
And the new baby was born last evening and will be coming home Wednesday. The ped says to keep them isolated from each other but I'm not sure how well that will go. Tomorrow this one will be going to stay with her grandma so they can be together for thanksgiving, but after that she will probably be back home.
In the meantime, I've been a cleaning freak. My hands are so dry from washing them so often, the house still smells of lysol, I've washed blankets we came in contact with on Sunday, anything I can think of. When she leaves I'm going to do a total deep cleaning in here and bleach the baby toys she's played with. I really hope no one else catches it if it is in fact more than a cold.
I've isolated K to his toyroom and anytime he comes in near the baby he washes his hands good after so I think I'm doing the best I can. I may be missing again till at least tomorrow evening.

  1. At least your friend left her baby with a good mama! Hopefully it wasn't swine flu, but the precautions are probably still a good idea. I don't think the virus lives on surfaces too well which is helpful. I feel bad for the mom having to choose between her sick baby and her new baby, very difficult.

This time of year my hands crack and bleed and DIE and we used to by the dove handwash because it was so moisturizing but they quit making it. So, we figured it's probably not too different from the dove body wash... so we wash our hands with body wash. I don't really know what the difference as far as effectively cleaning them or not, but at least they aren't cracked and bleeding. I highly recommend it after you have finished decontaminating your house.
