Early Intervention Evaluation

At Kristopher's 5 year check up, they had asked about any speech difficulties. I said that the only things I've picked up on is that his L's are W sounds, and the TH is an F sound. And occasionally R's are off depending on what part of the word it is. She suggested an evaluation since he is 5 now.

Yesterday was the evaluation. I didn't know ahead of time but it ended up being a total early intervention evaluation to see what areas he needs help with and if he qualifies for any programs seeing as he's not in full time preschool or kindergarten yet. It was about 45 mins and they asked him tons of questions. A lot of it he was real quick to answer and then started to bounce around in his seat and kind of sing some answers in this goofy voice. He was bored. It was very obvious. The only things he had trouble with was he doesn't know a few body parts. Such as, jaw, heel, waist, and I forget what the other question was. Basically they said it would be unusual if it was something he did already know.

The bottom line with it is he does not have any speech concerns. They said the letters he messes up on is very typical and they don't usually get that one down till around 7-8 yrs old. Something to do with baby teeth coming out, new coming in, and just that it's typical for his age. They also say he has an underbite that could cause some of the problem as well, but not to worry about it at all right now. That makes me feel better. Then they say that he's also not eligible for any of their services and that he is functioning on a "end of kindergarten level." Which they say means he is doing everything that is needed to pass kindergarten. And it's quite obvious that he was bored with the questions. There was a few things that they got him to think on, such as showing him a number and he had to put that many blocks on the table. He focused really well for that because he had to count them before he did it. I'm kind of concerned about how he will act in kindergarten next year. I mean, if he was clearly bored with a 45 min evaluation, I worry he won't sit still and listen when he needs to next year.
The only concern they have with him is his writing. He doesn't like to sit and practice here, so he doesn't do a lot of that. He doesn't hold the pencil properly. But he can write his name. We need to practice on making it small enough to fit in one row on the paper. I am going to work harder at that. They also said a way to get him to hold it properly would be take a bunch of crayons and break them small so he's forced to hold them the right way. He's weird about that and probably would not use them because they are "broken" so I don't plan to do that. We will figure that part out eventually.
I do think at this point the move is a very good idea because we will be in a better school district that will push a little to make him think more. This school district would be trying to say to medicate him because of not focusing. It's clear that he only loses the focus in learning situations when he is bored. So if we find a way to make him try harder and challenge him, that should not be a problem. I do have to say I'm proud of how that turned out and to all those negative people who said I'm failing him by keeping him home with me, they can bite me. Apparently I've done something right!
And he does start a little preschool program again that is ran though the high school child care class. It starts Thursday and will be a little over 4 weeks this time. He is so excited about that.

  1. Sounds like a good intake! As for the broken crayon issue, you can buy those little golf pencils. They would work jsut as well!
