I probably mentioned it before on here, but I forget. Kristopher's school is not doing the typical halloween parties and letting them wear halloween costumes to school. It's favorite book character day. So, they can come in costume, but it has to be a character from a book they know, and they have to be able to explain and share a little about the story. This has not been an easy task.
He's known since last year that he wanted to be a ghost this year. We still have the costume I threw together last year, and he really liked it. It was simple, and he got lots of compliments. We struggled for a while on what to do as a character. Finally we decided. Cat in the Hat. Then I try to find the costume in stores. Not available ANYWHERE. It would have to be ordered online, and of course I waited till this past weekend to find it. Also, the costume is a one piece jumpsuit that ties at the neck. He has to go to school in this, and be able to function normally all day long without help. So scratch that. Then I decide, how about one of the "Things". Look for a red sweatsuit. No luck. I asked the PTO president on Tuesday and she said let him go as his ghost, and he actually has several books with a ghost in them. I thought all was finally resolved.
Wrong. Tonight I went out to get the hair spray and the cashier got to talking and it turns out she has kids in the same school. And she thinks it's a very bad idea, and that it will be causing issues because they are "very strict" with the character rule, and seasonal books are not the same. It's not a true character. She said I really should check before sending him and causing problems. So this is just wonderful. I have one more day to get supplies and figure something out. The ghost will be the simple approach, and we're not doing face paint. Just hair color and the sheet costume, which is easy enough for him to take off to participate in recess and if he needs to. I can go out tomorrow and try one more time to find a pair of red sweat pants and do the THING 1 if I absolutely had to, but now I'm just annoyed and thinking he should just go as whatever. I personally don't care if he can recite a book to them at this point. But it's his first year there and he is so excited about Friday. I guess I will end up calling the office tomorrow to find out just so his day isn't ruined. It's total crap though.
I hope it works out. We were never allowed to dress for Halloween at my school. Some parents even protested the lyrics to Halloween songs we sung in music because they "don't believe in ghosts and gobblins." Ridiculous.
