Today was my parent teacher conference. It went a lot better than the earlier meeting where they brought up every single flaw they could think of.
I learnt today that the OT assessed Kristopher, and was told that he does hold and cut w scissors properly. His pencil grip is different, and they gave him a pick from whatever gripper he wanted, and since he picked one, that's improving. At home, that's improved a ton, and I'd say 90% of the time, he holds it properly.
She said he is very advanced in math. They have him working on mid second grade math currently, and will continue to keep going as far as he needs. He loves it.
Reading, he's also very advanced. He can read at way higher than normal levels, but comprehension still needs a little work. He's in the highest group still but the comprehension part is the set back because he picks books way out of his reading group level, and doesn't keep up because he skips words he doesn't know already. We've been working on that too, and things are getting better. They've been working with him more on sounding out words, and finding other words in large words.
She sent me info for a new website he can work with where he can pick out books at the library, and then do the comprehension parts online. He can earn points to earn prizes, which is a huge selling point for him.
Overall, it was a good meeting, and I feel like they are helping him stay at his level.
That's great! It sounds so much better than last time. I guess it's important to remember here that he may need work in some areas, but it's not that he's not capable of doing it, he just needs practice.
ReplyDeleteWe had Michael's screening this morning. His lowest score was his fine motor skills, but he was still in the "good" range, so no needs there yet, and the screener said that it was very typical for a boy (you know, cause boys aren't as smart as girls or something like that). Still working on things at home. He sits down and scribbles in his coloring book a couple of times every day.
